The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS, has officially been announced as the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major!
We’re thrilled to announce the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS as the seventh member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM).
Following a record-breaking year in 2024 as Australia's largest marathon, the event returned on August 31, 2025, with 33,000 runners crossing the finish line, with expectations to surpass its previous participant numbers as it continues to grow in scale and significance on the world stage.
Announced at the TCS New York City Marathon, the TCS Sydney Marathon has earned its place among the world’s most prestigious marathon events, joining the ranks of the Abbott World Marathon Majors alongside the Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America, TCS London Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, and TCS New York City Marathon.
What are the Abbott World Marathon Majors?

The Abbott World Marathon Majors are the biggest and most popular running event series on the planet featuring the most high-profile best-known and most desirable marathons in the world.

This series currently comprises of annual races in the cities of Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City.

How has Sydney become the seventh member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Series?

The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS underwent a multi-year process that required each year to pass AbbottWMM’s criteria for two consecutive years, before becoming the next Abbott World Marathon Major. Through significant increase in marathon participation - from 5,300 in 2022 to 25,000 in 2024 - several updates to the start area and the course, a huge uplift in entertainment and fan zones, and delivering a world-class event fit for the Majors series.

The TCS Sydney Marathon was announced as the seventh AWMM on Monday, 4th November 2024 at the TCS New York City Marathon, with Sydney’s first year as a Major taking place on Sunday, 31st August 2025.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) is a series of seven of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world - Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America, TCS London Marathon, TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS, BMW BERLIN-MARATHON, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon.
