A little bit about the seventh wonder of the marathon world
The TCS Sydney Marathon - announced as the Seventh World Marathon Major in November 2024 - is a World Athletics Platinum Label marathon and is the sole remaining participant legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The event is owned by Australian Athletics and managed by Pont3.
The marathon course starts at the same location in North Sydney as the Sydney 2000 Olympic Marathon and takes runners across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, around the landmarks of The Rocks, Circular Quay and Centennial Park, before finishing in front of the world-famous Sydney Opera House.
The race is the largest marathon in Australia and has experienced exponential growth since becoming a candidate race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2022. In 2025, the event welcomed a record-breaking 35,000 marathoners from over 120 countries in its first year as a Major.
Since its inception, the event has raised over $36.2 million dollars for charitable organisations and set a new event record of $8.8 million raised in 2025.
