After an incredible surge in popularity during our Abbott World Marathon Major Candidacy period, and a record number of 25,000 runners in 2024, the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS course is one of the greatest marathon routes in the world.
We are committed to a streamlined route, removing tight sections and having fewer U-turns and an earlier start time. These changes have set a new benchmark in the event's history and create a better overall experience.

Immerse yourself in one of the world’s most scenic marathon courses, taking in some of Sydney’s most spectacular and historic landmarks, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. The changes we have implemented in recent years are designed for faster times and a better runner experience, regardless of time goals, ensuring we deliver a world-class course that meets the standards expected by the community and participants.

Here are some major changes we've made in recent years:
The start of will be from Miller Street, next to North Sydney Oval, echoing the historic start line of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Marathon. Plus, we have removed the tight sections around Darling Harbour and Pyrmont, introducing longer, straighter sections, and reducing the number of U-turns.
A start line that celebrates Sydney 2000
We have removed a tight uphill section and number of turns in Pyrmont, further improving the experience during the first 10km of the marathon course.
An easier run during the early stages
You can breathe easy, the number of out and backs the previous route took through Centennial Park have been reduced by four kilometres in previous years.

We’ve also upgraded the facilities at the start area at North Sydney Oval and St Leonards Park to include more toilets (for those pre-race nerves), a longer and wider start chute, and better designed starting waves.

Extension of Anzac Parade
To find the additional distance lost in Pyrmont and Moore Park Road, we have extended Anzac Pde, a long straight, wide section of road to allow runners to get into their rhythm

You can breathe easy, the number of out and backs the previous route took through Centennial Park have been reduced by four kilometres in previous years.
Moore Park Road
We have listened. In 2025, there will be no uphill battle up Moore Park Road at 35km. Instead, runners will turn left off Driver Avenue onto Moore Park Rd, allowing for a fast last 6km push to the finish line.

Electrolytes will be located at the 5km, 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km, 35km and 40km drink stations along the course, and is indicated by the “W+” icon on the TCS Sydney Marathon course map. Electrolytes will also be at the Finish Line recovery area.

GU Gels (on-course gels) are available at the 20km and 30km drink stations along the course, and is indicated by the “E” icon on the TCS Sydney Marathon course map. The number of GU Gels out on course are limited and not guaranteed. If you require gels as part of your nutrition plan, we strongly recommend you carry your own supply.

Water will be available at all drink stations along the course, and is indicated by the “W” icon on the TCS Sydney Marathon course map.

A designated marathon-only refreshment station will be located after the finish line at the Marathon Recovery Zone.

All drink station locations are marked on the course map and there are portable toilets at each drink station.
