Getting to the Start Line

With major road closures in place, the best way to and from the event is by public transport. Plenty of extra early-morning transport services will be running to get you to the start venue at St Leonards Park in North Sydney.

Travel on all modes of public transport* is included for registered participants and volunteers; simply show your race bib to Transport staff when boarding services, no need to tap on/off!

Each start group and assembly area will have unique arrival instructions and timings that will be communicated by email in August. Please avoid arriving too early - this will greatly help our operations on the day and ensure the best start area and start line experience for all 41,000 marathon participants on race day.

Plan ahead at transportnsw.info/sydney-marathon or using the event’s Official Smart Map, which will be released in August. For timetables, real-time transport service updates and tracking, use the transportnsw.info Trip Planner

*International and Domestic Airport access fee excluded.

Getting to the Start Line

  • For participants in Purple and Orange assembly groups, catch trains to North Sydney Station. Follow the signage and staff directions to the start venue, which is approximately a 1km walk away via Walker St. Early morning trains will be running.

Participants in Green assembly group connect with Sydney Metro services to Crows Nest. (see below “Metro” instructions).

More information on your assembly area will be available closer to event day.

  • The nearest metro stations to the start venue are either Victoria Cross Station or Crows Nest Station, depending on your start group. Early morning services will be running.

Connect with Metro services in the CBD from Central, Gadigal, Martin Place or Barangaroo Stations. If you’re coming from the north, change at Chatswood or Epping to join the Metro. From the south or west, change at Sydenham or Central to join the Metro. From the east, change at Martin Place to connect with Metro services.

Participants in Purple and Orange assembly groups, catch metro to Victoria Cross. Follow the signage and staff directions to exit via Denison Street, then Walker St.

Participants in Green assembly group catch metro to Crows Nest. Exit via Clarke St, then follow signage and staff instructions, continuing towards the start venue via Burlington St and Falcon St.

More information on your start group, timings and specific arrival instructions will be available closer to event day.

  • Be aware that due to event road closures, bus services will be heavily impacted. The closest stops to the start area will be around Crows Nest. Limited buses will make stops along Falcon St near St Leonards Park in North Sydney. Plan ahead using the transportnsw.info 'Trip Planner'.

  • Early morning services will be running from 3.45am on all light rail lines, including L1 Dulwich Hill from the Inner West and L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines from the Southeast.

Catch the Light Rail to Central to connect with Metro services to Victoria Cross or Crows Nest or Trains to North Sydney Station, depending on your assembly group colour.

Be aware that L3 Kingsford line services will be affected due to major road closures in the Southeast, and light rail services will not be operating from Kingsford after 5:47am. If you are travelling after this time, you will need to catch L2 Line light rail services from Randwick to the city instead.

  • Drop-Off

We strongly urge participants to catch public transport on event day, as significant road closures will be in place around the start line and along the course. If you are coming from local areas only, a dedicated drop-off area will be available at ANZAC Public School on Anzac Ave off Ernest St.

    Accessible Drop-Off

If you require assistance due to a disability, an accessible drop-off is located in the North Sydney Boys High School car park on Falcon St.
