Venue Volunteers

Roles & Responsibilities

We operate three venues on event day with Volunteers:
 

  • Start Venue – Miller Street, North Sydney

  • Marathon Finish Line – Sydney Opera House

  • 10km Finish Line and Recovery Village – Royal Botanic Gardens
     

In the venues, the teams are made up of Functional Area Managers, Workforce Managers, Volunteer Managers, Volunteer Support, Team Leaders, and Crew along with various other Event Staff who all support one another to deliver an excellent event to all participants and spectators.

  • This team monitor the start chute, ensuring that only participants with bibs are in the chute and start the race. Prams will start in the last wave of each event. 

  • Wave Pen Crew will assist the Wave Pen Managers with a variety of tasks including ensuring only participants with the right details enter the pen at the right time, hydrating runners before the event, and providing information about the event.  

  • Bib collection volunteers allocate and distribute bibs to participants, and support the Registration Manager with managing lost bibs. 

  • The role of an Event Information volunteer is to have a thorough understanding of the venue to be a source of information to spectators & participants. You will be based at an Event Information booth and will be provided with maps and a booklet of Frequently Asked Questions. 

  • Navigator Ninjas are based in static and roaming positions within your Venue to provide directional assistance and information to race participants and spectators on Event Day. Navigator Ninjas should use the training & maps provided to them to identify key landmarks & event areas to participants (e.g. the location of toilets, corporate marquees, sponsor tents/activations, baggage collection area). You will need to follow instructions from your Area Manager and Team Leader. 

  • Accreditation volunteers assist the Accreditation Manager with checking in workforce, suppliers, and crew and distributing accreditation passes. This team will also reprint lost passes as needed. 

  • This team supports the Accessible Drop Off Zones into the start venue and to the correct wave. 

  • Start Chute Sweepers are based in the start chute with all the runners! This team assist with keeping the start chute clear, collecting jumpers and other items that may be left on the ground and placing them in dedicated clothing bins.

  • This team is responsible for ensuring runners' smooth and orderly flow as they cross the finish line. This may include directing runners to the appropriate areas, managing traffic flow, and assisting with any issues. Finish Marshals will also assist the Athlete Services team with tagging the first, second and third male and female athletes. 

     

    Please note - this role will be standing for the majority of the day and requires helping marathoners as the come across the finish line. 

  • This team is responsible for congratulating all finishers and awarding medals, placing the medals over the runner. 

  • The role of an Event Information volunteer is to have a thorough understanding of the venue to be a source of information to spectators & participants. You will be based at an Event Information booth and will be provided with maps and a booklet of Frequently Asked Questions.

Navigator Ninjas should use the training & maps provided to them to identify key landmarks & event areas to participants (e.g. the location of toilets, corporate marquees, sponsor tents/activations, baggage collection area). You will need to follow instructions from your Area Manager and Team Leader.

  • Working alongside the Hospitality Manager, you will be making sure everyone going into the VIP area is accredited to be there. You will assist the Hospitality team in ensuring that the VIP area is running smoothly, and that guests’ needs are being catered for. You may be required to escort VIPs into the VIP area. 

  • This team is responsible for handing out finisher bags to runners as they cross the finish line. This may include congratulating runners, distributing bags containing post-race refreshments and recovery items, and directing them to the appropriate areas for post-race recovery. 

  • Medical Spotters will support the medical team with looking out for finishers who may require medical assistance. The medical team will brief this team on visual symptoms to look out for.

10KM Finish Line & Recovery Village – Royal Botanic Gardens

  • This team ensure constant crowd flow across the finish line and out into the finish chute, congratulating finishers before they receive their medal. Keep an eye out for any lost children and direct them to the Kids Waiting Zone.  

  • This team is responsible for congratulating all finishers and awarding medals, placing the medals over the runner. 

  • This team work together to set up the drink station at the 10KM Finish Line, and hydrate runners as they finish their race. 

  • The role of an Event Information volunteer is to have a thorough understanding of the venue to be a source of information to spectators & participants. You will be based at an Event Information booth and will be provided with maps and a booklet of Frequently Asked Questions. 

  • Navigator Ninjas are based in static and roaming positions within your Venue to provide directional assistance and information to race participants and spectators on Event Day. Navigator Ninjas should use the training & maps provided to them to identify key landmarks & event areas to participants (e.g. the location of toilets, corporate marquees, sponsor tents/activations, baggage collection area). You will need to follow instructions from your Area Manager and Team Leader. 

  • This team guide and educate participants to separate their waste into the correct bins. You will be given the chance to interact with participants in a positive light and play a valuable role in reducing our environmental footprint. 

  • This team supports anyone needing help with navigating their way around the finish venue. 

  • This team help organise marathoners’ baggage by bib number and return their belongings post-race. While you will take care of belongings, you will not take responsibility for missing/damaged belongings. This is a fun, fast-paced role. 

  • This team are available to advise any family and friends of the status of runners on course - you should be competent with technology and bring a comforting attitude as supporters may be concerned about the welfare of the participant that they are checking on.
