The 1,000 metres that changed everything

From a trans-Pacific flight to a purpose-driven finish line, New Yorker Matt Mol says running the TCS Sydney Marathon with the We Run Foundation was the moment that reshaped his entire “why”. What started as one race quickly evolved into a global mission – with Matt now three Majors deep and chasing all seven in honour of communities who benefit from We Run’s impact.

He describes Sydney, Berlin and New York as life-changing in different ways, but says New York was a “homecoming”, powered by crowds, emotion and one unforgettable moment in the final kilometre when he stopped mid-race to help a para-athlete reach the finish. “We pushed each other every step,” he says. “That last 1000 metres changed everything.”

“Running has changed my life for the better,” Matt says, “and the We Run Foundation has given me the opportunity to meet and share experiences with people from around the world."

Achieving dreams with the We Run Foundation

When New Yorker Matt Mol boarded a plane to Sydney earlier this year, he thought he was crossing the world to run a marathon. What he didn’t realise was that he was stepping straight into a community that would shape his purpose, deepen his running journey and change the way he thought about what it means to show up – for himself and for others.

Since then, Matt has ticked off two of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors for the We Run Foundation, including Sydney and New York, and with a third – the 2026 Tokyo Marathon – already locked in, there’s no stopping this father-of-two and his belief that running can change lives far beyond the finish line.

When did your running journey begin?

“I started running 10 years ago to improve my discipline and patience, and embrace doing something difficult. Since then, I’ve had two kids adding health, fitness and mental wellness to my goals.”

Why are you committed to being a fundraiser for the We Run Foundation?

“Running has changed my life for the better. I believe it has the power to do the same for others, especially those in underserved or marginalised communities.”

Tell us about your race at the TCS New York City Marathon and the overall experience?

“As a New Yorker, having recently run the TCS Sydney Marathon for the We Run Foundation, it was a sort of homecoming. While the lead up, size, and logistics were intimidating, the experience exceeded my expectations. Brooklyn's energy was unmatched, once again making me proud to call the borough home. This course was challenging, but the cheering crowds pushed my every step forward. The last 1000 meters was unimaginable.”

What was your race highlight?

“There are so many moments that come to mind: shout out mile 8 in Brooklyn, the view up 1st Ave, and the turn into the park at mile 24. But for me, the race and my life – changed with 1000 meters left. I ran by a para-athlete who had pulled over on the side of the road. Running by, I quickly asked if she was okay, to which she said yes. So I kept going, begging for 800 meters to arrive faster. A few moments later my intuition said "she shouldn't be here". Para athletes start after elite, before non-elite. Based on my pace, she should likely have finished earlier, so I turned around and ran back to her. I asked her again if she was okay and she said she was tired and just needed a break. I said, ‘No problem, I'll stay with you and we'll finish together’. She asked my name and shared hers Stephanie. We pushed each other figuratively and physically those last 1000 meters. Cheering, celebrating, and striving all the way across the finish line.”

How have your experiences running for the We Run Foundation shaped a newfound appreciation for why you’re out there and what it means to be a participant?

“We Run has given me the opportunity to meet and share experiences with people from around the world people like Steph, "the Hammer", who has cerebral palsy and empowers others. Steph owns a training studio for people with disabilities called Staying Driven. She's remarkable and I think we're going to be life long friends as a result of our experience.”

What does it mean to you to run for the We Run Foundation?

“Honestly, it means the world to me. Personally, I'm chasing the dream of running the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors over the next two years  a journey which began this year in Sydney with the We Run Foundation. It was my first time in Australia and the We Run crew welcomed me with a "morning mate", a flat white, and a shake out run around Sydney. I'm thrilled to have found a global partner to support and who supports my ambition that aligns so well with my personal purpose of helping people achieve their full potential. Thanks to We Run for giving me a chance to achieve my dreams!”
