5 of the most scenic marathons in the world

Writer: Lucy CousinsLucy Cousins

With more and more Aussies interested in long-distance running, it’s no surprise that marathons across the world are selling out in record time… including our very own. And what’s not to love about spending a few hours pushing your mind and body to its limits with a bunch of like-minded runners?

So if you’ve been bitten by the running bug (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?), it might be time to consider your next race. With 42.2km of road to tread, why not choose one of these scenic races so you can treat your eyes while your muscles do all the work?

TCS New York City Marathon

Best for: Sky-high downtown city vibes

When: November

The world’s largest marathon, the TCS New York City Marathon is legendary. We’re talking around 52,000 runners, side by side through one of the world’s most iconic cities. Not only do runners love it because the course traverses all five distinct boroughs of the city with booming supporters at every corner, but it’s likely you’ll be running shoulder to shoulder with your favourite celeb. In fact, everyone from Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds to comedian Kevin Hart has crossed the finish line. Plus, the atmosphere is electric, the crowds are huge, and it all culminates in a grandstand-lined finish in Central Park. Get there hours beforehand if you want to be a sideline supporter, it gets busy…

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon

Best for: Running in the shadow of Table Mountain

When: October As an official Abbott World Marathon Majors Candidate Race, the Cape Town marathon is definitely one to watch. And for good reason. Last year around 21, 0000 enjoyed this epic race featuring lots of flat stretches and stunning city-mountain-and-ocean views from start to finish. Held in the southern African springtime, you can expect a cool early morning and mild sunny day for race day so bring layers. The organisers are also firmly focused on sustainability with zero waste going to landfill from the event. Don’t even think about dropping that water bottle on the course…

TCS Sydney Marathon Presented By ASICSBest for: Sparking harbour and parkland views

When: August

It’s so surprise that we think the TCS Sydney Marathon has the most beauty-filled finish line of all marathons (but we’re biased). As the newest member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, we’re especially proud of our race day route as it dates back to the marathon at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Starting in North Sydney, you’ll run across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, alongside the waterfront, around the lush Centennial Park to finish smack bang in front of the Sydney Opera House. Talk about a photo finish! And did we mention the historic Rocks precinct, Walsh Bay and Darling Harbour? You just can’t beat that.

The Shanghai Marathon

Best for: Views of modern and traditional architecture

When: November Another Abbott World Marathon Majors Candidate Race, the Shanghai Marathon is one of China’s most popular running events with around 38,000 runners every year. Starting at the historic Bund precinct on the banks of the Huangpu River, this epic point-to-point route sees runners glide through the city centre before ending at the West Bund Art Center in Xuhui District. The crowd support for this race is impressive, with traditional Chinese music instruments and streets lined with supporters. This flat and fast race is a favourite of the locals with growing interest from the rest of the world. Get in fast and experience the blend of modern and traditional China.

TCS London Marathon

Best for: Getting up close and personal with history

When: April

See London in a whole new light while you pound the pavement on the London Marathon. Every April, this insanely popular race offers up one of the most scenic running routes in the world. On race day, you’ll be cantering past historic sites like Tower Bridge, Big Ben, and even King Charles’ casa, Buckingham Palace. Known for its charity focus (get involved!) and for its epic crowd support, this iconic race attracts both world-class athletes and first-time marathoners, and it’s definitely the best way to overcome your jetlag. Cross the finish line, then head to the closest pub for a pint (joking, leave that for the day after.)
