Healthy everyday habits that’ll help save the planet

Training isn’t just about chasing a PB. There’s a way to run smarter – for you and the environment, says Alice Kendall, Founder of Pledge for the Planet.

When I started Pledge for the Planet, it wasn’t about being perfect. It was about doing what I could, and inviting others in.

So, instead of fundraising, we decided to ‘action-raise’. It’s a simple but effective concept. Participants ask their community to commit to a climate pledge in support of their event.

Instead of tracking dollars, we track pledges made, waste reduced and CO₂e saved.

Want to join us? Here are a few ways you can bring healthy habits for people and planet into your daily routine…

1. Rethinking your daily commute

If you’re training for the TCS Sydney Marathon, you’re likely clocking up kilometres each week. Why not combine movement with your commute? Running or walking to work, even once or twice a week, is a win for:

• Your cardiovascular health

• Your mental wellbeing

• Your wallet

• And emissions reduction

It supports both personal performance and planetary health. Win-win.

2. Reducing your plastic use

Plastics show up everywhere in a runner’s routine… coffee cups, bottles, packaging, gel wrappers. Many have plastic linings that sit next to what we consume, contributing to microplastic exposure. A simple step forward for your health and the planet?

• Use a keep cup

• Carry a reusable bottle

• Choose low-plastic packaging

• Make your own pre- and post-run snacks

3. Add another layer to your running

If you’re taking on the TCS Sydney Marathon, you can create your own Individual Mission page and start action-raising today to help make a difference. You can also join Our Kickstart Mission – a 21-day activity and sustainability challenge, with marathon spots up for grabs.
