TCS SYDNEY MARATHON CALLS FOR RECORD VOLUNTEER NUMBERS AS EVENT DEEPENS INVESTMENT IN PROGRAM

Fuelled by 44% year-on-year growth, registrations are now open for the largest volunteer
operation in the event’s history.
(Sydney, 20 May 2026) The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS has today opened
volunteer registrations, calling for a record 6,500 places to help deliver the largest volunteer operation in the event's history on Sunday, 30 August. Alongside a greater investment in the volunteer experience, Sydneysiders are invited to play a defining role in one of the city's greatest sporting spectacles.
The call comes during National Volunteer Week (18-24 May), as the TCS Sydney Marathon,
Australia's largest marathon and the only Abbott World Marathon Major in the Southern
Hemisphere, shines a light on the community of people who make the event possible.
Wayne Larden, CEO and Race Director of the TCS Sydney Marathon, said volunteers were
the heartbeat of race day.
"There is no TCS Sydney Marathon without its volunteers, and this year we’re asking more
of Sydney than ever before,” he said.
“As we prepare for our second year as an Abbott World Marathon Major, thousands of
volunteers will set their alarms before dawn, pull on their uniforms and give their weekend to this event. They cheer strangers through the wall at kilometre 30, direct excited participants to bib collection before the race and embrace thousands of participants at the finish line. They are the heart and soul of this marathon, and as we grow, we are investing more in them than ever before because the experience they create for every runner on course is irreplaceable.

the runners themselves."
This year, the TCS Sydney Marathon will recognise its volunteer community like never
before, with the unveiling of a new NSW-shaped commemorative pin as part of the event's yearly pin tradition for volunteers. In 2026, the program will also introduce an exclusive TCS Sydney Marathon jacket for volunteers who take part on race day, who will also receive access to the Volunteer Ballot, a dedicated entry pathway that gives race day volunteers a better chance of securing a place on the start line for the 2027 event. Together with existing benefits including a hat, t-shirt, refreshments and certificate, the 2026 program marks the most comprehensive volunteer offering in the event's history.
Volunteerism at the TCS Sydney Marathon has grown substantially year-on-year, a trend
that reflects both the event's elevation to Abbott World Marathon Major status and a genuine desire from the community to be part of something larger than themselves.
National Volunteer Week is Australia's largest annual celebration of volunteers and the vital role they play in communities across the country. The TCS Sydney Marathon is proud to mark the week not only by recognising its volunteer community, but by taking deliberate steps to grow and reward the program that makes the event possible.
