It’s official. Running clubs are booming right now and one of Sydney’s most popular clubs is The Sydney Run Club (TSRC) based in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. We caught up with the club’s co-founder and director, Emilio Khatis, to get the load down on why this club is quite literally the talk of the town.
Emilio, tell us, how did the Sydney Run Club come about?
“Well, the Sydney Run Club actually started pretty humbly – just five mates running together back in 2023, out of Ramsgate and Bondi. We kicked things off with a donut as our logo, not taking it too seriously at first. But as we started sharing the runs on social media and opening it up for anyone to join, the momentum picked up really quickly. Within three months, we had around 100 people showing up, and by the six-month mark, that number had grown to over 300. What began as a simple hobby turned into something way bigger.”
Why do you think the club has grown so fast?
“I guess what makes The Sydney Run Club so special is the community itself. We welcome everyone, no matter where you’re from or what level you’re at. Social acceptance is at the core of what we believe in. What also stands out about the members is their mindset. Every morning, they step out of their comfort zones, waking up before the sun rises to run alongside a group of like-minded people. That kind of energy and commitment creates a really powerful, positive atmosphere. That dedication and support for one another really came to life during last year’s TCS Sydney Marathon, where 67 of our members ran and completed their very first marathon. That’s what TSRC is all about.”
So, what would a newbie experience on their first TSRC run?
“From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed with open arms. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and making sure everyone feels part of the community – we encourage everyone to introduce themselves to someone new each week, which really helps build connections. From guided stretching and the run itself to post-run coffee catch-ups, yoga, and breathwork sessions – there’s something for everyone at TSRC. It’s not just a run, it’s an experience.”
How does the club support runners who are training for the TCS Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS?
“So, this year, we’re expecting a team of around 50-60 runners to take on the Sydney Marathon – which is extra special now it’s a World Major and tickets are harder to come by. To support them, TSRC provides a completely free 16-week training program, with three guided runs per week. We also supply energy drinks before and after sessions, exclusive TSRC training gear, a pre- and post-marathon event, and even a dedicated bus ride to the start line – absolutely free. It’s all about giving our community the tools, support, and energy they need to chase big goals together.”
What are some of the upcoming TSRC events that you're excited about?
“Just recently, we hosted international DJ John Summit at the run club for a special 5km run out of Bondi – it was definitely one for the books. We’re also teaming up with RAWDAWG, the biggest run club in the US, for a collaborative run that’s going to bring some serious energy. We also host a monthly café party after our runs to support local businesses, and at the end of every quarter, we put on a pop-up charity run to raise funds and awareness for causes close to our hearts. On top of that, we’ll be throwing pre-race parties where we hand out uniforms and sponsor-supported gear for major running events like the Sydney Marathon. Big vibes and even bigger goals ahead!”
On a personal note, what does TSRC mean to you?
“For me, it’s more than just running. It’s a space that gives both us and our 40,000+ members a sense of routine, direction, and purpose. It’s helped so many people grow, build confidence, and connect with like-minded individuals they might never have met otherwise. The club offers a chance to switch off from the stress and pressure of everyday life and simply enjoy the morning and the company of an incredible community. Personally, I snapped my ankle just 10 months before running my first marathon – Sydney 2024. After surgery, I was told I’d never run again. But in that moment, I made the decision to prove them wrong and set my goal to finish the marathon within 12 months. And I did. TSRC helped me do that.”
What's your best tip for running the TCS Sydney Marathon?
“It’s simple: running a marathon is 60% mental strength and 40% preparation. Your mindset is everything. Strength starts in your mind and is reinforced by the environment and people you surround yourself with. So, set your goal, commit to it, and do everything in your power to cross that finish line. And while you’re out there running, take a moment to be grateful. You’re healthy enough to take part in one of the world’s greatest races, in one of the most incredible countries. That alone is a blessing.”
