Why more runners are turning to Pilates

Better movement often leads to better running, says Head Coach Ben Lucas. But stronger runners aren't always the ones who run the most.

One question I get asked a lot is, "Should I be doing Pilates while I'm training for a marathon?"
My answer is usually, yes.
Most runners think getting better simply means running more. Sometimes that's true. But after coaching hundreds of marathon runners, I've learnt that the people who stay healthy and keep improving aren't always the ones running the biggest kilometres. They're the ones who move well. That’s where Pilates comes in, because when you move better, you normally run better.
It helps you stay injury-free
Running is one of the most repetitive sports there is. Step after step, the same movement, thousands of times. And over time, little weaknesses start to show. Your hips might start to drop, your glutes might stop doing their job, your upper back might get tight, or your running form might change as you get tired.
That's where Reformer Pilates can make a real difference. Not because you're injured. Because you're trying to stay injury-free. Pilates helps build the things running doesn't always give us, like:
· Hip stability.
· Core strength.
· Pelvic control.
· Mobility.
· Body awareness.
It builds strength and mobility
Another reason I like Pilates is that it gives runners quality movement without adding more impact. You can build strength, improve mobility and keep your body feeling good without turning it into another hard training session.
That's especially valuable during taper when you're trying to freshen up and not wear yourself out.
It helps you stay consistent
One thing I've learnt over the years is the best runners aren't always the ones who train the hardest. They're the ones who can keep training consistently. I've recently been looking at the NordicTrack Ultra 1 Reformer, and I like what they've created.
It makes high-quality Reformer Pilates much more accessible, whether you're training from home or fitting sessions around work and family. That’s important because Pilates is not just about recovery. It's an important tool that helps you stay healthy, keep showing up and keep enjoying your running.
