The night-before marathon checklist

A calm race morning starts the night before, says Head Coach Georgia Weir. Here’s how to help yourself feel prepared.

One of the easiest ways to reduce race-day stress is to have everything organised the night before. The less you have to think about on race morning, the more energy you can put into enjoying the experience.
Step #1: Make sure you’re charged up
Set aside time the day before to charge your devices, like your watch and headphones. Running out of batteries (and music) at kilometre 20 will absolutely get you down.
Step #2: Prepare your outfit
Before you go to sleep, lay out your shoes, socks, race kit, race bib, watch, headphones, anti-chafe balm, sunscreen and anything else you'll need to take with you.
Step #3: Plan your nutritional needs
Set out your breakfast as much as possible, check your gels are packed and make sure you've planned how you'll carry them.
Don’t forget! Race day isn't the day to experiment with anything. Wear the shoes you've trained in, eat the nutrition your body knows and stick with the gear that's worked throughout your training. A calm start often leads to a better race.
