Why running tech can make training easier

One of the great advantages runners have today is access to technology that can help guide training and keep us accountable, says TCS Sydney Marathon Head Coach Ben Lucas.



For runners today, apps like ASICS Runkeeper Go make it easier than ever to stay organised and track progress over time. Whether it’s distance, pace, heart rate or simply how often you’re getting out the door, having that data helps runners stay accountable.

 

But technology should support your training, not control it. Here’s how.

 

Use technology as a motivating trainer

 

I encourage runners to use apps, GPS trackers, heart rate monitors and tech as a guide. A way to generate useful data for your training – track your runs, review your weekly progress, and look at trends over time.

 

Why? It’s incredibly motivating to see the kilometres stack up over months of consistent training.

 

Manage your training load with tech

 

Technology can also help with planning. When runners log their sessions and their results, it becomes much easier to manage their training load and avoid the classic mistake of doing too much too soon. Training load is the total stress your training places on your body over time. For runners, that’s how much work you’re doing and how hard that work is.

 

 

Build your community online

 

Another advantage of all this available tech is the ability to build your community. Many platforms allow runners to connect with friends, share sessions and celebrate progress together. That sense of connection can be a powerful motivator.

 

At the same time, don’t forget to listen to your body. A watch or app can give you numbers, but it can’t tell you how you feel. The best runners combine both. They use the data to guide them, but they trust their body to lead.

 

Technology is a great tool. Used well, it helps turn good intentions into consistent training.
