It’s time to sign yourself up for a shorter pre-race to prepare you for the big event, says TCS Sydney Marathon Head Coach Ben Lucas.

Looking to up your game and take your training to the next level? We spoke to TCS Head Coach Ben Lucas for his advice for how to prepare like a professional for race day.

Ben, what is one of the most underrated ways to prepare for the TCS Sydney Marathon, presented by ASICS?

“When runners are preparing for a big race like a marathon, it can be incredibly useful to include a shorter ‘B race’ along the way. Think of it as a dress rehearsal.”

What kinds of races should be considered for as a ‘B race’?

“Many Sydney Marathon runners will use races like the Real Insurance Harbour 10 as a stepping stone. A 10km race is the perfect opportunity to practise the things that matter on race day, pacing, pre-race routines, fuelling and managing nerves. All the essentials.”

What does a ‘B race’ give you that regular runs can’t?

“Training can sometimes feel abstract for runners. You’re following a plan, but you don’t always know where your fitness sits. Running a shorter race gives you the experience of lining up at a start line, running with other people, and pushing your effort a little harder than a normal training run. A smaller race gives you a real benchmark. You learn what race effort feels like and how your body responds. Just as importantly, it helps build confidence.”

From a coaching perspective, what can a shorter race tell you?

“Racing experience can provide valuable feedback. If something doesn’t go perfectly – pacing, nutrition, preparation – it’s far better to learn that lesson in a shorter race rather than on marathon day.”

When should we be doing this shorter ‘B race’?

“Well, your “A race” is still the main goal. But a well-placed “B race” at least 4-8 weeks beforehand can make a huge difference in how prepared and confident you feel when that big day arrives.”
