Motivation gets a lot of attention in sport, but discipline is what actually drives progress says TCS Sydney Marathon Head Coach Ben Lucas.
Most runners feel motivated on race day. The real challenge is showing up consistently on the normal days – the early mornings, the busy weeks and the sessions that don’t feel exciting.
That’s where discipline matters most.
Here are three ways to be consistent with your training, even when you’re flat-out.
1. Plan your training
One of the simplest ways to stay consistent is to plan your training week in advance. Look at your schedule and decide when your runs will happen. Once they’re in the diary, they’re far more likely to happen.
I often tell runners to treat their training like any other important appointment. You wouldn’t cancel a work meeting or a doctor’s appointment at the last minute. Give your training the same respect.
2. Focus on preparation
Preparation also helps. Lay out your gear and breakfast the night before. Know your route. Know your session. Small habits remove friction from the process. Making it easier to train than to cancel.
3. Be realistic in your expectations
Another key point is keeping things realistic. A training plan that demands seven sessions a week might look impressive on your laptop, but if your lifestyle only allows for five training sessions, frustration is guaranteed. Consistency beats perfection every time.
If you can string together weeks of steady training, the results will come. Discipline isn’t about being extreme. It’s about being reliable – and showing up again and again.
